Predators aren't accustomed to be attacked. Fear and seeing an animal fleeing from them is a trigger that says "this is a prey". But when in doubt, if the animal runs at it, the predator will either stand its ground and reevaluate the fight or run off. That's especially impressive when you see a lone 150kg lion run from a 45kg warthog that got startled.
