Crossing water is tricky in stock vehicules and speed isn't your best friend.
Up to hub is generally ok.
If water does a wave on the hood, chances are engine bay is nearly flooded.
Know where your car air intake is and proceed with caution. An expensive repair is coming if you don't.
It is not so much about the car, but the way you drive. The air intake of most cars is in front high under the hood. If you go in with a wave, the wave will get into the air intake. If your filter gets wet, your car will run but smoke / water vapor will come from the exhaust. If you get enough water in so your filter is flooded, your engine will compress water instead of air. Water is incompressable, so it will bend your pistons and destroy the engine.
Higher cars like trucks and SUV have higher positioned intake, but the wave will get them, too. Slower than walking speed and most cars are fine.
